Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) is taking part in a project for acquiring technologies of underwater welding – in September 2023 the testing phase began under RS survey.

The project is organized by the Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering Rubin with the participation of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and the Training Science and Technology Center Svarka. The final result envisions the development, testing and certification of welding materials and the technological process of underwater welding.

"Nowadays, the issues of underwater welding operations approval are growing more urgent. In particular, such technology is in demand for emergency repairs of the hull, details of offshore platforms and subsea pipelines. In this regard, RS is planning to develop and introduce a new chapter regulating underwater welding into the Rules for the Classification and Construction of Sea-Going Ships, thus paving the way for the practical application of new technology by the industry," commented RS Deputy Director General Sergey Shishkin.
