RS Class: a ship for Sakhalin-2 project is launched

On June 30, 2016 launching of a new ice-breaking supply vessel for the Sakhalin-2 production platform took place. The vessel is under construction to the class of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) on the order of Sovkomflot within the long-term agreement with Sakhalin Energy-2.

RS class notation: KM(*) Icebreaker6 AUT1 OMBO FF3WS DYNPOS-2 ANTI-ICE ECO WINTERIZATION(-35) supply vessel/oil recovery ship/special purpose ship.

This vessel is the first of four ships ordered by Sovcomflot for operations at the Sakhalin-2 project. The other three are emergency response and rescue vessels (ERRVs) that have a smaller deadweight (2,000 tonnes), but offer enhanced functionality and can carry more passengers. The construction of all four vessels began in 2015 on the production facilities of the United Shipbuilding Corporation - Vyborg Shipyard and Arctech Helsinki Shipyard.

The ships are designed for the year-round delivery of personnel, supplies and consumables to three production platforms in the Okhotsk Sea. In an emergency, the vessels are also able to undertake complex environmental protection measures, and will enhance the safety of personnel based on these production platforms. The first ship is due to be delivered in 1Q 2016.
