Global Maritime Community Gathers in London for 34th IMO Assembly

The 34th session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly has commenced at IMO Headquarters in London, convening the global maritime community for a pivotal two-week forum. Delegates from 176 Member States, alongside non-governmental and intergovernmental representatives, are in attendance.

The Russian delegation, led by the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, features Sergey Kulikov, Director General of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS), along with Deputy Director General Andrey Fasolko and Head of the International Affairs Department Oleg Chernov.

The Assembly, IMO's highest governing body, meets biennially to set the Organization's strategic direction. Its key functions include approving the work programme and budget, determining financial arrangements and electing the IMO Council.

Beyond core strategic and budgetary decisions, the session’s agenda includes matters related to the IMO Member State Audit Scheme, amendments to the Convention on the IMO, committee reports and recommendations, reports on the status of conventions and other multilateral instruments, among other issues.

The expert support provided by RS aids the Russian delegation in effectively representing national interests at international events. RS contributes deep technical and regulatory expertise, including vessels flying the flag of the Russian Federation and a wide range of administrative and procedural matters of the maritime sector.

RS reviews technical documentation, surveys ships and offshore facilities under construction and in service, certifies vessels and companies for compliance with international conventions, recognizes and certifies industrial products and manufacturers, certifies quality management systems for compliance with international and national standards.

Today, RS is actively expanding its scope of services in the field of engineering and consulting, the development of technical documentation for vessels in service, marine warranty surveys, management system certification and recognition of manufacturers. In addition, RS surveys all container types, including tank containers and offshore containers, confirms compliance of packaging for dangerous goods, as well as renders services on the declaration and certification of dangerous goods and bulk cargoes.
