Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) is supporting HII Tech’s CryoSafe-42 project on the development of a type UN T75 tank-container with multi-layer insulation for temporarily storing and transporting liquid hydrogen by sea, river, road and railway transport.
The role of RS in the collaboration is twofold: approving the technical documentation of the tank-container for multimodal transportation and advising on the design, manufacturing and testing of a pilot sample. The new UN T75 tank-container will implement advanced technologies in compliance with the UN recommended standards of equipment for transporting hazardous goods.
According to the CEO of HII Tech, Anton Kovalevsky: "The CryoSafe-42 project unites the expertise of the engineering and technical personnel under HII Tech and Russian Maritime Register of Shipping for the creation of the first-ever Russian prototype and further serial production of a tank-container for transporting liquid hydrogen. The success of the project will provide new opportunities for developing the hydrogen economy, facilitate technological progress and the promotion of innovative business solutions".
Sergey Kulikov, Director General of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping, noted: "The practical experience our experts gained during the project strengthens the knowledge and skill base of RS for accompanying new technological developments in the transportation and storage of liquefied gases. The cooperation of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping and HII Tech opens up new prospects, bringing together the technical and business communities in a joint effort to become pioneers of the hydrogen market”.
RS is an active participant in the rulemaking processes of international organizations aimed at improving the safety standards for transporting hazardous goods by sea. For example, as a result of RS experts' initiative to make amendments to The International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code in 2022, IMO approved the maritime transportation of tank-containers with polymer composite vessels. RS is also working on incorporating requirements for the use of alternative marine fuels and technologies in the transportation and storage of liquefied gases into its regulatory and technical framework.
