RS introduces requirements for machinery of polar class ships

Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) has revised Chapter 1.3 of Part XVII "Distinguishing Marks and Descriptive Notations in the Class Notation Specifying Structural and Operational Particulars of Ships" of the Rules for the Classification and Construction of Sea-Going Ships containing requirements for the machinery of polar class ships.

The document can be found under the section “RS Publications” on the official RS website.

The provisions of the Сhapter are based on IACS Unified Requirements UR I3 (Rev. 2 Jan 2023) and apply to main propulsion, steering gear, emergency and auxiliary systems essential for the safety of the ship and the crew.

The updated document details requirements for the calculations of ice loads and design parameters of propulsion system elements as well as introduces requirements for steering gear control systems for all polar class vessels.
