Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) participated in the 12th session of the Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR 12) as a member of the national delegation. The meeting took place in a hybrid format at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London.
The Sub-Committee tackled a range of issues on environmental protection and the prevention of pollution from ships, including:
A committed effort was made to develop amendments to MARPOL Annex II on tank stripping and washing operations when transporting cargoes with a high melting point or high viscosity. Likewise, discussions continued around amendments to MARPOL Annex IV on sewage treatment systems.
PPR 12 also approved a new Action plan to address marine plastic litter from ships. The document contains measures to address pollution by plastic pellets and fishing gear residueы to be implemented by 2030.
The recommendations approved by the Sub-Committee will be subject to further consideration with a view to approval / adoption at the 83rd session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee in April 2025.
