RS representative takes part in the Regional Dialogue on Sustainable Maritime Connectivity

At the request of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation  Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) took part in the 2024 Asia-Pacific Regional Dialogue on Sustainable Maritime Connectivity. The event, timed to coincide with the 46th Pacific Maritime Transport Alliance Conference, was organized by the Transport Division of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in cooperation with the Pacific Community and the Fiji Ports Corporation.

The Regional Dialogue was held in Nadi, Fiji, bringing together over 100 participants: delegates from 23 ESCAP member States, international organizations, representatives of the transport and logistics industries, representatives of the scientific community, as well as invited experts.

Representatives reported on the current situation of the shipping industry in the Asia-Pacific region, outlining the range of challenges faced by their countries, and discussed cooperation and support measures on the issues of enhancing maritime connectivity, decarbonizing the shipping sector, applying smart port technologies, ensuring resilience to disasters and climate change.

The Dialogue identified a number of measures to maintain and develop the shipping industry and improve sustainable maritime connectivity:

  • establishing medium- and long-term maritime transport State policies in view of international trends in decarbonization, digital technology and climate change;
  • expanding regional partnerships for capacity building and strengthening the technical collaboration between Asia-Pacific countries;
  • promoting cooperation with various stakeholders, such as shipping companies, port operators and local communities;
  • supporting the development of port infrastructure in collaboration with the private sector to provide access to modern energy and smart port transitions;
  • strengthening sustainable connectivity via enhanced energy efficiency measures in the freight transport sector;
  • expanding research and training projects together with international and regional agencies to advance maritime connectivity and port development in response to identified opportunities and challenges faced by Member States.

ESCAP has also announced its upcoming project “Moving towards efficient, resilient, low carbon and accessible port cities in Asia-Pacific Small Island Developing States to achieve better transport connectivity and accessibility for all”.

The next Regional Dialogue will take place in 2025 and will focus on South, Southwest and Central Asian countries.
