RS to expand cooperation with universities

Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) is planning to expand cooperation with specialized universities. This intention was voiced during the All-Russian scientific and methodical conference on The development of industry-relevant education in view of client-centric mechanisms, held in the Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping on April 13-14, 2023.

RS was represented by Mikhail Kuteynikov, Assistant, Scientific and Technical Activity, and the Head of the R&D Department, Dmitry Semionichev.

Reporting on the achievements of cooperating with educational and research centers, RS specialists recounted the principles, results and prospects of the Scientific and Technical Council (STC). Over the past five years, more than 40 of the Council’s research projects have been carried out and had their results reflected in the regulatory and technical framework of RS. For example, RS Rules incorporated requirements for dynamic positioning ships, pressure vessels, the storage and transportation of hazardous goods as well as for the use of methanol and ethanol as marine fuels.

RS representatives elaborated on the measures for supporting educational organizations: from personal scholarships for maritime students and an annual competition of graduation theses to the creation of themed classrooms. With the organization’s contribution, such classrooms were opened in the Admiral Makarov State Maritime University and Maritime State University named after admiral G.I. Nevelskoy.

Among the paths for expanding collaboration, RS identified the development of internship programs for knowledge-sharing among university professors and RS specialists. Other suggestions included joint scientific research, textbook creation and cooperation within the framework of State Certification Commissions. According to the speakers, RS sees great potential in uniting efforts within the practical sphere, for example, by carrying out various calculations, developing documentation and software.

RS also plans to increase student participation in internships and is considering options for selecting and training personnel. Moreover, RS is ready to assist students in the choice of relevant topics for their diploma projects and provide continuous advice throughout the thesis-writing process.
