Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS), represented by Mr. Mikhail Kuteynikov, Assistant in Scientific and Technical Activities, took part in the second WMO-IMO Symposium on Extreme Maritime Weather as a member of the Russian delegation.

The event was held at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), London, between September 23 - 26, 2024.

The Symposium was aimed at uncovering possible solutions to minimize risks posed by extreme weather events and share findings on relevant research conducted since the previous symposium in 2019. Participants were introduced to the latest international research on assessing the impact of extreme weather on the safety of shipping, weather data collection as well as digitalization of meteorological information and improvement of its transmission to ships. The Symposium also addressed developments in interactions between seafarers and meteorologists in order to increase awareness of hazardous weather events and provide timely prevention.

Significant progress was made in identifying areas of further improvement in the preparation and transmission of meteorological information to users, assurance of best available practices and solutions to minimize potential risks arising from the impact of extreme weather on ships, implementing opportunities to reduce those risks during the design stage and operation of ships.

Active participation of Russian delegates in the work of the Symposium will serve as a basis for further implementing newly acquired information into maritime rule-making.
