Hazards Identification and Risk Assessment of Ship Piping

In this article data on accidents caused by failure of piping are collected and analysed. Proceeding from the analysis of accidents caused by ship system failure, the authors classified the failures by their reasons and by the degree of system failure. Further, the authors identified the hazards from piping and its elements in different ship spaces and suggested a procedure for quantitative assessment of risk, based on the failure mode, effects and criticality analysis (FMECA). On the whole, the authors made a breakthrough in respect of the first two steps in formal safety assessment of ship piping.
