Review of Gas Fuel Application for Marine Propulsion Plants

The article considers the application of natural gas as fuel for ships other than gas carriers, peculiarities of using gas fuel for propulsion plants of different types (STP, GTP, marine ICE of different types) and the onboard storage methods for gas fuel. Hazards have been identifi ed associated with the application of gas fuel depending on the method of storage and application (type of propulsion plant). Basic gas carrier safety principles have been formulated suggested for implementation when developing the requirements of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping for the particular type of ships.
