Cooling system features in ship energy efficiency estimation

It is stated that the current IMO procedure for calculation of Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) does not consider the possible fuel saving of the ship under way due to use of the cooling systems with sea water coolers and omission of the cooling pumps. The comparative analysis of the IMO requirements and requirements of the national normative documents on the cooling system design is made. Proposals on amending the IMO procedure for EEDI calculation are formulated and substantiated.

Key words: Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), cooling systems, sea-water coolers.
