Systematic safely improvement for nuclear icebreakers: present day imperative

The opportunities for improving the safety of nuclear icebreakers through the accident management procedures are considered and different accident scenarios are reviewed. Design solutions are suggested to improve safety, namely, use of physical properties of the item subject to management, improvement in the reactor thermal and physical characteristics, additional design improvements. The diagram for choosing the accident management strategy is given.
