Abstract

Issues associated with the design of double-action ship propulsors are considered with due regard for current demands in respect of strength, propulsive and cavitation performance as well as vibroactivity. Full-scale test results obtained for research ship "Akademik Treshnikov" during ice navigation including astern movement are reviewed. Strength calculations for propellers designed in accordance with current Rules are presented and the need for further research into the matter is demonstrated for purposes including, among others, the adaptation of the relevant section in the RS Rules for the Classification and Construction of Sea-Going Ships to double-action ships.
Key words: double-action ships, propulsive and cavitation performance of propellers, vibroactivity.
