Tow force as an optimal characteristic to determine the number of tugs required in port

Abstract

Results are given of a study on developing normative documents to determine the tug number required and that available for tow and mooring operations in port. It is stated that the use of lower consumption engines and automation level growth resulted in an appreciable decrease of propulsion unit losses involving the tow force growth in modern tugs as compared to those of the turn of the last century. It is suggested that the tug tow force be used as an optimal characteristic to determine the required tug number.
