Software development to determine maximum holding force and heel angle of escort tugs with regard to RS rules

Abstract

The article covers mathematical model and software development to calculate kinematic and dynamic parameters being characteristic of escorting process using specific (escort) tugs. The most high-valuable of these parameters are considered as follows: the maximum holding force (maximum side force applied to the escorted ship stern), escorting speed, manoeuvring time (transit time for an escorted tug from one side of an escorted vessel to another). Compliance with safety conditions is required, which are characterized with permissible angles of heel, drift, rope deviation from the DP (centerline) of a vessel in tow, as well as the maximum permissible values of the tow line tension and winch forces. The option of fitting an escort tug with two thrusters is considered. Mathematical model of tug propulsion is made on the basis of data on ships with geometric characteristics related to escort tugs and type of propulsion and steering system. The work has been performed in furtherance (elaboration) of the RS Rules requirements.
