Abstract

At present projects of ships realizing a so called "double action ship" (DAS) concept (i.e. ships that can operate astern in ice conditions) are steadily increasing in number. The bow of such ships is designed to ensure good propulsion characteristics in the ice-free water, in particular, a bow bulb may be provided. This paper considers main provisions of the developed Draft of RS Rules' requirements for DAS ice strengthening structures. Requirements for the specification of ice strengthening areas along the hull length and side depth, regulation of ice loads on hull ice strengthening areas are given, and main requirements for stern structures are specified for ships designed for astern operation in ice conditions. The developed Draft will allow to adapt the "double action ship" concept to the ice classification system accepted in the effective RS Rules.
