Fire safety problems and solutions for ships and vessels under construction, repair and conversion

Abstract

In modern shipbuilding and ship repair the problem of lifecycle fire safety of ships and vessels has proved to be of great importance. In particular, it has been demonstrated by the consequences of fires that have occurred on board submarines and above-water ships under construction and repair in recent years. The accidents that happened have revealed a number of problems connected with fire safety provision and fire protection of ships, as well as significant drawbacks both in normative and technical documentation on fire safety and in the currently employed fire extinguishing methods. The article considers the ways of increasing fire safety in the process of construction, repair and refitting of ships and vessels including update of the requirements concerning updating and republication of normative and technical documentation on fire safety.
