Containers: manufacture

Technical supervision during manufacture, modification and modernization of containers, materials and products for containers.

Technical supervision during manufacture of containers, materials and products for containers as well as modification and modernization of earlier approved containers is performed in accordance with the RS-approved technical documentation.
Objective of technical supervision is to determine and establish compliance of containers, materials and products for containers with the RS requirements.

The scope of technical supervision is established by relevant Sections of the Rules for Technical Supervision during Manufacture of Containers, Materials and Products for Containers of the Collection of the Rules for Containers.

Key services:

  • technical supervision during manufacture, modification and modernization from the stage of acceptance/testing of materials to painting, checking of marking and final measurement;
  • technical supervision during testing of prototype and testing for serial production;
  • assessment of compliance of containers with additional requirements of the customer as a third independent party during manufacture;
  • issue of Certificates of Approval which:
    • confirm that a prototype of a container has been manufactured, tested and complies with the applicable requirements of the Collection of the Rules for Containers as well as applicable requirements of international conventions and codes: International Convention for Safe Containers, 1972, as amended; Customs Convention on Containers, 1972, as amended by the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code; applicable requirements of ISO standards;
    • entitle the firm (manufacturer) to attach to the container a plate with approval references in compliance with the requirements applied to transportation.
  • drawing up of Initial Certificate during manufacture confirming that the container is approved for operation. Depending on the type of container and customer’s requirements, the Initial Certificate may be drawn up for each container or for a batch of containers.

When carrying out technical supervision, RS does not control fulfillment of requirements relating to safety measures, sanitary regulations and work organization as well as other production matters outside the RS competence.

Upon results of technical supervision, the Register draws up documents in electronic form and/or in a hard copy. The list of documents is given in Chapter 2.4 of the General Regulations for the Technical Supervision of Containers of the Collection of the Rules for Containers.

All containers manufactured under the RS technical supervision are included in the RS database. The information on the next survey date from the database is available in Section ʺContainers in serviceʺ.

To provide traceability, facilitate search and protect against forgery, each RS document bears a unique QR code. When scanning a QR code, one shall be directed to the RS official website automatically. Blurry and illegible QR code and forwarding to an unofficial RS website indicate that the document is forged.
