Prevention of marine ecosystem pollution with ship ballast water: problems and solutions

Abstract
The practical importance of the ship ballast water sterilizing is substantiated with a view to preventing the transfrontier biological pollution of marine ecosystems. The requirements of the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ship's Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM), which are aimed at preventing the transfrontier biological pollution of marine environment, and the opportunities of their implementation in Russia are reviewed. The structure, methods and techniques used for developing a national ballast water management system for sea-going and river-sea ships are considered.
