Oil filtering equipment in compliance with international requirements on oil pollution prevention

Abstract

The article deals with the milestones of designing the international requirements for the prevention of oil pollution from ships. Also the basic requirements of the International Convention for Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973, as amended by the 1978 Protocol thereto (MARPOL 73/78), as regards oily bilge water discharge within special areas and the use of filtering equipment is considered. Efforts have been made to focus the challenges that shipowners may face in meeting the requirements of Annex I to MARPOL 73/78. The recommendations of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping for installation of the complete set of the approved filtering equipment on ships, irrespective of the area of their operation are given. The article also specifies the latest results of the MO activities on the development and adoption of the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (Polar Code), and describes the potential consequences of its application with regard to the operation of vessels and prevention of oil pollution in the Arctic.
