Feasibility study of Arctic containership optimal parameters for transit navigation along the Northern Sea Route

Abstract

The article deals with the development of the conceptual design of ice class vessel for the year-round transportation of container cargo along the Northern Sea Route (NSR). The assessment was made of the future transit container cargoes on the NSR and research investigations were carried out directed towards the selection of efficient technical solutions and development of versions of the Arctic containership with high TEU capacity and operational scenario on the NSR seaways. Within the framework of the realized feasibility study, the ice routes on the sailing lines were formed, different versions of icebreaker support were considered and calculations of containership speeds on the specified operational routes were performed. Analysis of the obtained operational and economic characteristics of navigation will enable to substantiate the optimal version of the containership and formulate the principal technical and operational requirements for its design.
