Abstract

Due to the creation of new fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials, FRP ship hulls construction development, as well as the accumulation of designing experience, the current Part XVI "Hull structure and strength of glass-reinforced plastic ships and boats" of RS Rules for the Classification and Construction of Sea-Going Ships" (RS Rules) has ceased to reflect the contemporary level of development within the industry. This article presents the main provisions of the new edition of Part XVI of RS Rules for construction and strength of FRP ships, highlighting the new approaches to the development of requirements to FRP and raw materials, as well as the methodology of theirs certification. The revised Part XVI outlines the basic requirements to the design of FRP hulls and superstructures, including framing systems, shell, framing members and the execution design of the main structural components. Specific features of the strength calculations for the structures made of these materials are also considered, taking into account FRP's layered texture and anisotropic properties.

Keywords: fiber-reinforced plastic, ship, hull, superstructure, hull structures, strength.
