Abstract
The article presents the results of the research carried out by State Maritime Technical University (SPbSMTU) for decreasing the width of the barred speed ranges, prescribed by the results of torsional vibration calculation of the ship shafting and installations. It is shown that using the proposed method based on the close-to-resonance torsional vibration levels assessment the barred speed range width can be reduced compared with the one required by RS Rules, which has a positive effect on the operational characteristics of the ship. This work corresponds to the research on the topic carried out by IACS Machinery Panel, and in this regard may become the basis material for improving the MAKO URs, which specify the requirements for torsional vibration calculations of the ship shafting and evaluation of their results.
Keywords: shafting, resonance vibration, barred speed range, permissible stresses, fatigue strength.
