Simulation tool for evaluation of influence of seaport warehouse capacity on inland transport service quality

Different characteristics of a terminal define its commercial attractiveness, but the most important one is its throughput capacity. The difference between demand and the terminal’s throughput can lead to the decrease in its cargo flow while cargo flow allows a company to have an effect from economies of scale and to keep its market share. At the same time, surplus of productive capacity increases capital revenue, which cannot be recovered by a small cargo flow. The throughput capacity of a port is defined by the productivity of the weakest element in the technological chain of cargo handling. And this requires precise analysis of technical characteristics of the terminal’s elements and their mutual influence. The paper considers one of the crucial problems of the kind – the problem of seaport and inland transport interaction. The limited capacity of a warehouse and the productivity of railroad service may lead to railroad transport queues on the way to the terminal in case of a ship's delay, also causing a possible underload of a ship should it arrive earlier as there may be not enough cargo in the warehouse. The authors suggest simulation modelling as a tool to get qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the processes. The suggested model helps reveal the dependence of length of trains' queues on the warehouse capacity and productivity of handling operations on railroad transport service.
