Ahead of the 84th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), the IMO headquarters hosted a meeting of the Intersessional Working Group on the Reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions from Ships, with RS experts taking part in the discussions.

The Working Group focused on drafting recommendatory IMO guidelines necessary for the effective implementation of MARPOL Annex VI requirements in relation to the IMO's Net-Zero Framework.

Progress was made on draft Guidelines covering the calculation of Greenhouse Gas Fuel Intensity (GFI), the recognition of sustainable marine fuel certification schemes, reward mechanisms for ships using low- and zero-carbon fuels, as well as life cycle GHG/carbon intensity assessments of marine fuels.

The group’s work does not prejudge any decisions of the MEPC regarding the adoption of the amendments themselves. Any Guidelines developed by the Working Group may only be adopted if the corresponding MARPOL amendments are adopted by the Committee.

Expert-level discussions of the draft Guidelines will continue during the 84th session of the MEPC
