RS Participates in the 70th IAEA General Conference in Vienna
Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) took part in the 70th Regular Session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference, held in Vienna from 14 to 18 September.
Established in 1957 and bringing together 181 Member States, the IAEA is the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of nuclear energy. Its General Conference is its highest governing body, convened annually in Vienna to take decisions on nuclear safety, safeguards and the peaceful uses of nuclear technology, as well as to approve the Agency’s budget and work program. This milestone session brought together approximately 3,000 participants.
RS Deputy Director General Sergey Shishkin and Head of the International Affairs Department Oleg Chernov attended the conference as members of the Russian Federation’s delegation. Alongside the plenary sessions, the General Conference featured a series of thematic events, including a side-event organized by the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom “Welcome the Floating Power Units – Zero Emission Ready-to-Deploy Energy Solutions”.
At the event, Mr. Shishkin delivered a presentation on the RS expertise in the classification and technical supervision of floating nuclear power plants (FNPP). He highlighted its unique experience in the nuclear sector, emphasizing that RS is the world’s only classification society with both nuclear-powered ships and FNPPs in its class.
Nuclear power is attracting growing interest worldwide for maritime applications. It is regarded as a safe and viable option for commercial shipping, offering the potential for high-speed maritime transport without frequent refueling. At the same time, innovations such as FNPPs provide versatile sources of energy capable of supplying coastal and remote communities and industrial facilities. Against this backdrop, RS brings unique expertise in the classification of nuclear-powered ships and FNPPs.
